The Opposite of Courage

"The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice. It’s conformity." - Earl Nightingale

Have you ever been called a “conspiracy theorist?” If you’re like me, you’re almost numb to it at this point.

There are conspiracies, and it's okay to theorize.

Sheesh.

What’s worse than being called a conspiracy theorist?

How about a conformist?

You know, someone who does what they’re told with no questions asked. The guy who:

  • Stays “informed” via television
  • Always trusts the "experts"
  • Posts “I Voted” sticker selfies on social media with the caption, “Do your part!”

Yeah, that guy’s a 100% certified conformist.

We conspiracy folk are different. We think critically. We're practical, rational, and open-minded. We are warriors for truth! Non-conformists!

But stop right there.

Does the term actually apply? Unfortunately, no, it doesn’t. Not often enough, anyway.

For most self-identified non-conformists, the evidence in their lives suggests that they are still conforming. In spite of their beliefs.

Even more troubling, some of these conforming non-conformists consider themselves to be elite.

((Pun intended))

Their worldview makes them feel superior to the people, the "sleeping masses," around them.

Since they see what those people don't, won't, or can't, they position themselves atop an "awakened" perch and look down at them. Judging. Resenting. Pitying. Waiting for them to catch up.

In their minds, their willingness to analyze reality objectively makes them courageous. They are brave because they are not afraid to see the world as it truly is.

  • Evil
  • Corrupt
  • Et cetera

And anyone who doesn't see it or won't acknowledge THE TRUTH is a SHEEP.

Sound familiar?

Are their opinions accurate or off-base? Are their assessments of reality rooted in delusion or sobering truth?

Well, that’s beside the point.

What I'm getting at here is that:

Ideas and opinions alone do not make a person a non-conformist.

Only actions do that.

Some people mock the masses, but stay in the herd.

They hate their "matrix" jobs, but they refuse to quit.

Why?

Insecurity.

Rather, a false sense of real security.

“I hate my job! But I can't quit because... the benefits!”

No job or career can give anyone actual security. True security can only come from one place:

Within.

Real security is inner security. It's the opposite of anxiety.

Time is our most precious resource. There is no bigger waste of time than a job or a career that you do not like.

There are countless problems in our world. There is deception, manipulation, and tyranny. There are lies, wars, and questionable agendas.

The biggest tragedy of all is the unrealized potential of almost every person here.

Mankind loses when a man fails to adhere to his calling.

Life is a gift. And not to be thankful for it is the worst kind of ignorance. The best expression of appreciation for life is a lifelong commitment to excellence. Becoming a professional in a world of amateurs.

“There is a place that you are to fill and no one else can fill. Something you are to do which no one else can do." - Plato

This is what it means to be a non-conformist.

You want things to get better? Improve your own life first.

You want the world to change? Increase your service.

Every second spent complaining that humanity needs to "wake up" is a waste of precious time.

Job security is a lie. A perpetuated myth that keeps generation after generation in shackles. A comfortable bondage that denies people access to a higher purpose. Their real mission here on earth lies dormant until death.

A man's whole world can turn upside down. He can lose his job, his house, his possessions—everything. If he has developed inner security and is secure in who he is, he will build himself and his world right back up again.

A secure man knows who he is and what he's capable of. And no one, nor circumstance, can take it from him.

He is Self Reliant.

“Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
